Major Theme Analysis:

It's Not The Destination But The Journey

I love this movieeee...I love, love, love it!! Guess what? I got myself the Blue-Ray disc of the movie and happily departed with RM45. Oh blimey! Worth it though, it kept me giggling even after several exhaustive reruns.

The movie scored highly for its use of typage. The typage of the character themselves will keep you laughing even if they dont say a word. Bit funny though, I got the chance to watch the making of the movie and none of these guys (Ulysses, Pete and Delmar) appeared as funny fellas. Well ya' all...aint that kinda funny! (guess i seem to have a knack for those hillbilly southern accent by now)

In short, the story was told of a trio of escaped convicts (chain gang)set out to retrieve a whopping USD1.2 million. It turns out that Ulysess Everett Mc Gill (sound familiar? yes, thats right...based on Homer's Oddysey epic doug!). The problem was...there was no such money! Everett Ulysses made that pile up (a jumbo!) in a lame and desperate attempt to save his marriage.

As depicted in Homer, Ulyses was seduced by the sirens. Ummm, umm home boys, were those sirens hot pieces of mama mia! Personally liked the slate eyes...the ones raising her arms and squeezing her underpants high in the air. (Err..I am talking about cinematography ok). If it aint much..but the Director sure did manage to create an ambiance of seduction under those purportedly heavy make ups. Noticed that their make-ups did not run down although they were almost soaked all over? Hmm, must have one of those smudge free type kinda thingy.

Anyway, in their adventure they met with several weird characters that was parallel with the Odyssey. Big Dan Teague correspond to the Polyphemus the cyclops. George Nelson or Baby Faced George Nelson corresponds to the shape changing Proteus ...and Penelope (Ulyesse's wife) to Penny.

For some reason, I am not able to cram all the ideas about the similarities between Homer and O'Brother because there are too much to mention. I will post it later though. I am trying my best to go through the whole 24 books that i recently downloaded because I really felt something was amiss here and there with the summarized version. By the way, this Homer guy must have some big kahuna doug.

Shortly after they met Tommy Johnson (the black dude who claimed to have sold himself to the devil in exchange for being able to play the guitar), they went to make a record and introduced themselves as the 'Soggy Bottom Boys'. Soggy Bottom Boys?? Somehow I lost my appetite to soggy jello bread for weeks. The only thing that they did not realize was that they were a hit...with a one hit wonder 'Man of constant Sorow'.

I dont fancy the Klu Klux Klan but the dance routine that they made in the movie made they look like the Koo Koo Klub (pun intended that is!). At preserving the K.K.K American way of life, Tommy Johnson was to be executed and the trio of escaped convicts came to the rescue. I have to say yay Obama!!

The climax of the film was when Eulysses tried to persuade Penelope from marrying another man. That was also the event when the 'Soggy Bottom Boys' was discovered and their personality of being an inmate was revealed. Noticing that the 'Soggy Bottom Boys' was a hit with the crowd, the Governor of Texas, "Pappy O' Daniel" decided to take advantage of the situation in securing his votes by including the 'Soggy Bottom Boys' in his campaign. The Governor gave full pardon to the 'Soggy Bottom Boys' but the policemen who was hunting the trio seemed to be obsessed in punishing the 'Soggy Bottom Boys'.

The policeman matches the description when Tommy Johnson (the guitarist) described the devil as "White..as white as ya ol boys...with empty eyes and a big hollow voice. He loves to travel around with a mean old hound". The police managed to catch them at Eulysse's old house (he was supposed to get back his wife's wedding ring in a trunk). As they were about to be hanged, Ulysses made his peace with god and then the place was over flooded into a river for a hydro electric project.

P/s: Love the part when the policeman's dog was drown. Twirling and twirling like an astronaut defying gravity in free space. Wondered how they captured the shot. Hope they didn't drown the darn dog for real. If you like musical genre, you also might like to watch some of my personal recommendation: The Sound of Music and Moulin Rouge
